Frequently Asked Questions

DEFINITION AND BASIC CONCEPTS

What is hydrogen water?

Hydrogen water or hydrogen-rich water (also called hydrogen-enriched water or H2 water) simply means normal water (H2O) that contains dissolved molecular hydrogen (H2).

Does H2O have H2 in it?

A water molecule has two hydrogen atoms, chemically bound to the oxygen atom. This is different from the hydrogen gas molecule (H2), which is two hydrogen atoms bound only to each other and available for therapeutic benefit.

Do we get H2 when we drink H2O?

Everything contains hydrogen. It is both the most abundant and smallest element in the universe. However hydrogen is typically bound to other atoms or molecules and not available as H2. Unless water is H2 enriched we don’t get H2 nor do we get O2 from H20 because they are chemically bound to the water molecule. In order for H2 to have therapeutic benefits it must be dissolved into its molecular form.

How is hydrogen water different from regular water?

Regular water contains hydrogen and oxygen atoms bonded to form H2O. Hydrogen water has free, dissolved hydrogen gas in addition to the water molecules. Some proponents suggest that the dissolved hydrogen may act as an antioxidant.

MEDICAL STUDIES AND HISTORICAL DISCOVERY

Are there proper medical studies done on consuming hydrogen rich water?

Yes, there are over 1,000 peer reviewed medical studies that have tested the efficacy of hydrogen rich water on a number of health issues, diseases and athletic performance. In many cases the results are quite remarkable. To date there have been no significant negative medical or health side effects reported by any of these studies. We encourage you to do your own research. You can review a number of medical studies in the Science section.

When was hydrogen’s therapeutic benefits first discovered?

The first account of the potential benefits of hydrogen water dates back to 1798 when it was discussed by the English scientist and doctor Thomas Beddoes. Beddoes speculated about the possible health benefits of hydrogen gas in his writings on therapeutic gases. However, it was not until much later that scientific research substantiated these early hypotheses with rigorous studies.

In recent years, the interest in hydrogen-rich water has surged, particularly following the pivotal 2007 study by Dr. Shigeo Ohta, which demonstrated the selective antioxidant properties of molecular hydrogen (H2).

Japan recognized hydrogen therapy as a medical procedure in 2016. This recognition came from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, which approved hydrogen gas inhalation therapy for patients suffering from conditions such as acute myocardial infarction (heart attacks). This marked a significant step in integrating hydrogen therapy into conventional medical treatments, acknowledging its potential benefits in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in clinical settings.

HEALTH BENEFITS AND MECHANISMS

What are the benefits of drinking H2 water?

H2 water has been demonstrated to have positive effects on health issues such as sleep disorders, low energy levels, joint pain, arthritis, digestion, inflammation, diabetes, kidney and liver function and a host of other disorders. The primary impact of drinking H2 water is its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that allow it to treat a host of human health issues.

Why is H2 often called the miracle molecule?

Hydrogen water is often called the "miracle molecule" because of the unique properties of molecular hydrogen (H)—the smallest and lightest molecule in the universe. This exceptional characteristic allows it to penetrate human tissue within seconds, reaching areas that other supplements and antioxidants cannot.

Why should I consider H₂ water instead of regular water for wellness?

Hydrogen water has gained recognition for its potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Studies (over 1,000 peer-reviewed articles) suggest benefits for digestion, joint health, metabolism, sleep, and athletic performance. Regular water does not contain free molecular hydrogen, so it cannot deliver those documented H₂-related benefits.

What are the main hydrogen-rich water benefits backed by scientific research?

Studies suggest potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These may support better sleep, digestion, joint health, and athletic recovery. Consistent consumption of hydrogen-rich water is often recommended for the best results. Read more in the Science section.

Are our bodies accustomed to hydrogen gas?

Yes. Our bodies actually generate hydrogen during the digestion process. Some of this natural H2 production has been hampered in recent years due to contaminants and pollutants in our food supply such as herbicides and pesticides as well as micro plastics entering the water supply. Secondly our bodies are in fact composed of a high degree of hydrogen. 63% of the atoms in our bodies are hydrogen atoms and 10% of our body mass is hydrogen.

Is there a difference in the effects of drinking H₂ water on men and women?

Current research generally indicates no major sex-specific differences in how hydrogen-rich water provides its antioxidant or anti-inflammatory benefits. Hydrogen (H₂) selectively targets harmful free radicals, a mechanism that appears consistent in both men and women. However, minor variations might still occur due to factors like body composition, hormonal cycles, and metabolic differences. Overall, the improvements in areas such as energy, sleep, and recovery have been observed across all adults, and any perceived differences tend to be individual rather than based on gender.

USAGE, DOSAGE, AND TIMELINE

When can I expect to feel the benefits of drinking H2 water?

Many of us will begin to feel some modest improvement with better sleep, well-being and even digestion within 14 days. Individual results depends upon personal circumstances, intake consistency, and the concentration levels of the H2 water that is being consumed. So to begin to feel substantial  benefits of hydrogen-rich water for improved athletic performance, recovery, and better sleep, the duration can vary, but most studies using regular therapeutic levels of H2 water, suggest that noticeable improvements can be seen within a few weeks of consistent use.

How much H2 water should I drink (dosage)?

The typical recommended amount is about 1 liter of therapeutic H2 water per day, though this can vary based on individual needs and specific levels of H2 concentration.

To achieve optimal benefits, consistency is key - it is important to drink approximately 1.0 litres of H2 water on a daily basis.

What is the recommended daily H2 water intake?

Most studies recommend daily H2 water intake of between 1 to 2 litres per day. Athletes will typically consume up to 3 litres per day.

The level at which H2 becomes therapeutically available for improved human health is around 1.5 parts per million (ppm). As there is no toxicity to H2 water it is generally safe to drink H2 water at higher concentration levels. Medical Studies have been conducted on patients up to 15.0ppm that have demonstrated cellular regeneration.

How to dose the H2 water intake?

It may be beneficial to start with a lower amount (e.g., 500 ml to 1 liter) and gradually increase to the recommended daily intake. This allows the body to adjust and helps monitor any potential side effects.

Distributing the intake throughout the day (e.g., morning, afternoon, and evening) can help maintain consistent hydrogen levels in the body. Drinking hydrogen-rich water before and after physical activity may maximize benefits for athletic performance and recovery.

SAFETY, SIDE EFFECTS, AND REGULATORY APPROVAL

Is hydrogen-rich water safe?

Yes, hydrogen-rich water is considered safe for consumption even at several hundred times the concentrations produced by hydrogen water bottles.

Can hydrogen-rich water become toxic?

Molecular hydrogen (H) is a naturally occurring, non-toxic gas. When dissolved in water, it does not form any harmful compounds and is safe to drink. The human body is naturally exposed to small amounts of hydrogen produced by gut bacteria, indicating its inherent safety.

Does hydrogen-rich water have a regulatory approval?

In Japan, hydrogen-rich water has been recognized for its therapeutic benefits and approved by The Ministry of Health for specific medical uses, which further underscores its safety profile.

Isn’t hydrogen gas combustible?

At extremely high concentrations H2 gas can be explosive. However our bottles produce H2 at a maximum 6 ppm (parts per million). In order for H2 water to be combustible we would need H2 concentrations at 40,000 ppm. So in other words our bottles produce H2 at 0.015% of the combustible level.

Is it possible to drink too much hydrogen-rich water? Can I overdose with hydrogen water?

Generally no. It is nearly impossible to overload water with hydrogen. Once water is H2 saturated, any excess dissipates. If you drink high concentrations of H2 water without a gradual increase in consumption some people have experienced short-term diarrhea and head-ache but those symptoms typically disappear within 1 or 2 days.

Can pregnant women and the seniors drink hydrogen rich water?

Yes. The primary effect of hydrogen-rich water is to assist with the maintenance of a suitable oxidation level for good health. It has no contraindications but it is always advisable to consult with your healthcare professional.

PRACTICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

What kind of water should I use in my hydrogen water bottle?

It is best to use filtered or bottled natural water. Tap water is not recommended simply because we cannot evaluate what additives, such as chlorine, have been included in urban water systems.

Should I consult my hydrogen water intake with healthcare providers?

It's advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new health regimen, especially for individuals with underlying health conditions or those on medication.

Can I store H2 water after I produce it in the bottle?

The stability of hydrogen-rich water and how long it maintains elevated hydrogen concentrations can vary significantly based on the type of container and whether it is open or closed. So it is generally recommended to consume your H2 water within 5 minutes of production.

Here's an overview:

Open glass Closed PET bottle Closed aluminum bottle

30-60 minutes

24-48 hours

2 days – 2 weeks

When H2 water is stored in an open glass, the hydrogen gas tends to dissipate quickly due to exposure to the air. Most studies and practical observations indicate that the hydrogen concentration can drop significantly within 30 minutes to an hour. The exact rate of dissipation can vary depending on factors like temperature, air circulation, and the initial concentration of hydrogen.

In a closed PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottle, hydrogen gas can be retained for a longer period compared to an open container. However, PET bottles are not completely impermeable to gases, and hydrogen can slowly diffuse through the plastic or a poorly sealed cap. Generally, hydrogen concentrations in a sealed PET bottle can remain relatively stable for several hours. Some studies suggest that significant loss of hydrogen might occur within 24 to 48 hours.

Aluminum bottles are much more effective at retaining hydrogen gas due to their impermeable nature. When H2 water is stored in a sealed aluminum bottle, the hydrogen concentration can remain stable for a much longer duration. It can stay at high levels for several days to weeks. The exact duration can depend on the quality of the seal, initial concentration of hydrogen, and how often the bottle is shaken or agitated. Aluminum bottles are generally considered the best option for preserving hydrogen-rich water over an extended period.

What can influence the production efficiency of hydrogen rich water?

The production of hydrogen-rich water using hydrogen generator bottles can be influenced by several environmental factors, including atmospheric pressure, altitude above sea level, and outside temperature. See a detailed explanation of these impacts.

Does a hydrogen water bottle work in any environment?

Environmental factors can affect hydrogen solubility. Higher altitudes and warmer temperatures can reduce the water’s capacity to retain H₂. For maximum benefits:

  1. Use cold or cool water.

  1. Keep the bottle sealed after generation.

  1. Avoid producing H₂ water in very hot conditions if you want to maintain higher ppm.

COMPARISONS

Does Ion Membrane electrolysis provide a better hydrogen infusion compared to conventional methods like SPE/PEM?

Ion Membrane electrolysis is considered a next-generation approach that often delivers more consistent hydrogen concentrations. Unlike older SPE/PEM systems, the Ion Membrane design featured in H2Ultra water bottles can enhance both the purity and stability of H₂ infusion. By optimizing conductivity and reducing scaling issues, Ion Membrane technology helps maintain reliable performance over repeated use. This can lead to higher and more stable ppm levels of hydrogen in each cycle, a feature that benefits users looking for strong antioxidant potential in every glass. It also prolongs the lifespan of the product and its efficiency.

What’s the difference between hydrogen water and alkaline water?

Hydrogen water is regular water infused with extra hydrogen gas. This added hydrogen may help reduce oxidative stress and contribute to an active lifestyle. Alkaline water, on the other hand, has an elevated pH level due to mineral content or certain treatment methods. Both can complement a healthy regimen, but hydrogen water is often favored by those looking for extra support against everyday free radicals.
